List below updated 02/19/21

1939-40 Season

(03-30-40) 1940 NCAA Tournament Championship - Indiana vs Kansas - Indiana, coached by Branch McCracken, won the national title with a 60-42 victory in the final game over Kansas, coached by Phog Allen.  Marvin Huffman of Indiana was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. - no sound, all dead-ball situations are edited

1941-42 Season

(01-24-42) Illinois vs Minnesota - Whiz Kids - silent b/w game film - included on 1942-58 Illinois basketball DVD, 9 minutes (Quality 8)

1944-45 Season

(03-19-45) 1945 NIT First Round - Depaul vs West Virginia - George Mikan scores 23 by halftime en route to a NIT-record 33 points total. - Black-and-white silent game film. 21 minutes. (Quality 8)

(03-26-45) 1945 NIT Championship - Depaul vs Bowling Green - George Mikan - In the mid-forties, the National Invitation Tournament was more prestigious than the NCAA Tournament. Indeed, DePaul had their choice between the two, and chose to go to the Garden for the eight-team invitational. In the quarterfinals, Mikan put up 33 points against West Virginia. In the semis, he astounded onlookers with a record 53-point effort. Still, leading up to this game, sportswriters wondered whether Bowling Green`s seven-foot giant Dan Otten would prove too much an imposition to the shorter, thinner Mikan`s pivot game. He did not. Mikan put up 34 points, finishing with a then-astronomical 120 points in the tournament, and was named its MVP.  Unfortunately, this is only the final of three reels. It runs 8:23 and concludes with the trophy ceremony. Mikan scores more than a few baskets in this footage, nonetheless. It`s black and white, silent, and slightly edited. The picture is absolutely fantastic, though there are some film artifacts, smudges and scratches, which are to be expected. - Black-and-white silent game film. 21 minutes. (Quality 9)

(03-20-48) Holy Cross vs Kentucky - Eventual 1948 champions, featuring future NBA All-Stars Ralph Beard and Alex Groza, take on Bob Cousy and Holy Cross!  Beard and Groza are fairly unknown by now and are worth reading about -- they were each on the fast track to stardom and potentially legendary status (Groza, especially) before they were made scapegoats for a sweeping 1951 point-shaving scandal that threatened to ruin all of basketball. They had each been NBA All-Stars in their rookie years for the Indianapolis Olympians before the scandal broke and they were subsequently banned from basketball for life. Pretty tragic stuff. Cousy almost strikes me as being too good at passing for his teammates at this level! - This is a 38-minute black-and-white silent game film. Real nice stuff. (Quality 8.5)

To this day, it remains the highest-rated game in the history of televised college basketball. Both Magic and Bird would enter the NBA in the fall of 1979, and the rivalry between them and their teams (respectively, the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics) was a major factor in the league's renaissance in the 1980s and 1990s. (03-29-92) 1992 NCAA Tournament Elite 8 - Duke vs Kentucky - A game that is highly considered as the greatest college basketball game ever played. The Duke Blue Devils and Kentucky Wildcats met in Philadelphia to decide the final spot in the Final Four. The game didn't disappoint, as both teams fought for, gained and lost leads during the course of the game. The only low point of the game came when Duke forward Christian Laettner intentionally kicked a Kentucky player while he was laying on the floor. Laettner got a whistle for a technical foul. Forty minutes was not enough to decide a winner, so the two powerhouses went into overtime. With Duke leading 102-101, Kentucky was able to get a late basket with only 2.1 seconds remaining on the clock to take a 103-102 lead. Duke needed a miracle. All-American Grant Hill had to throw the ball the length of the floor and hope that a Duke player would come up with it and make a last second shot. That player was Christian Laettner. Hill let the ball go and found Laettner at the free throw line where he faked, turned and fired as the clock expired. Nothing but net. Game over--Duke wins 104-103.
